A regional mall conditions 120,000 m3/h of make-up air for its retail concourse. EN159 used a rotary enthalpy wheel to recover both heat and humidity.
The Challenge
The mall needed large make-up air in all seasons. Recovering total heat (sensible plus latent) would cut both heating and cooling and dehumidification load.
Why Rotary Air-to-Air Recovery
For clean commercial make-up air, a rotary enthalpy wheel recovers total heat at high effectiveness. Mall air is not a forbidden sector, so wheel use is appropriate and gives the best energy savings.
The EN159 Solution
EN159 rotary wheel, 120,000 m3/h, total effectiveness 78 percent, wash-coated aluminium matrix with purge sector.
Measured Results
- Recovered heat: about 1.5 MW
- Heating load cut by 36 percent
- Cooling and dehumidification load cut by 26 percent
- Estimated payback: 14 months
Compliance and Selection Notes
Rotary wheel permitted for clean commercial mall air (not forbidden). Purge sector limits leakage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why wheel over plate in a mall?
The wheel recovers latent heat too, cutting both heating and cooling/dehumidification.
Is leakage a concern?
A purge sector limits supply-to-exhaust leakage to a few percent.
