Industrial Waste Heat Recovery Systems

What Is Industrial Waste Heat Recovery?

Industrial waste heat recovery captures energy from exhaust, process and flue streams and reuses it—for make-up air preheat, process heating, water heating or power assist. On many lines 20–50% of input fuel leaves as warm exhaust; an air-to-air heat exchanger is often the simplest, fastest-payback recovery step.

Where the Heat Is

Recovery candidates span every heated process: drying ovens, kilns and curing tunnels; food and grain dryers; textile and dye houses; battery and electronics curing; paint booths; paper machines; mine ventilation air; commercial HVAC; and boiler flue gas. Start with the applications overview.

Recovery Methods

Selection & Sizing

Quantify exhaust airflow, temperature, duty hours and fuel cost, then model recovered kW and payback with the heat recovery calculator. Respect contamination rules: pharma and lab exhaust must not recirculate (no-recirculation design). Use the selection guide to lock the type.

Energy-Saving Potential

Preheating make-up air by 20–30°C can cut heating load 15–40% on ventilated processes; drying lines see the largest gains because exhaust runs hot and continuous. Real examples: grain drying sensible recovery, mine ventilation, data-center free cooling.

FAQ

Which exchanger type for dirty exhaust?

Use plate with drain or a run-around coil so condensate and contaminants stay out of supply air.

Is flue gas recoverable?

Yes—see boiler flue-gas white-plume elimination for condensation + heat recovery.
