Commercial HVAC Heat Recovery (ERV)

Industry Problem

Commercial buildings ventilate large volumes of conditioned air. Discharging warm (or cool) exhaust while conditioning equal make-up air wastes energy and violates modern code targets.

Exhaust Conditions

Building exhaust is moderate temperature, clean to lightly dusty, often with humidity. Make-up air must be tempered and fresh.

Recovery Principle & Recommended Exchanger

Use an energy-recovery ventilator: plate (sensible, separable), rotary wheel (total recovery where mixing allowed) or run-around. ERV for commercial buildings preconditions make-up air. Rotary wheel AHUs and fresh-air recovery units are common packaged forms.

System Configuration

  • Plate core for sensible-only or where no-mix is required (labs, hospitals).
  • Rotary wheel for maximum total recovery in standard offices.
  • Run-around where supply and exhaust are remote.

Energy-Saving Potential

ERV typically cuts HVAC heating/cooling load 20–50% on ventilation air. See commercial ventilation recovery and public-space fresh-air recovery.

Material & Design Considerations

Aluminium or polymer plates; rotary wheels with purge sector; frost/efficiency balance in cold climates (see frost guide).

FAQ

Plate or rotary for my office?

Rotary gives higher total recovery; plate is required where supply/exhaust must not mix (healthcare, labs).
