Plate air-to-air heat exchangers fit the widest range of buildings because they are simple, contamination-free and easy to service. Below are the sectors where plates are the recommended geometry, each with the design rules that matter — for the technology background see the plate guide.
Commercial & Institutional HVAC
Offices, schools and retail ventilate continuously; a sensible plate ERV is often the fastest payback measure in the building. DOAS + plate is the common pattern, with enthalpy membrane plates reserved for humid climates.
Healthcare, Labs & Cleanrooms
Sterile zones ban rotary carryover, so sensible plate or membrane plates dominate; enthalpy recovery is used only in non-sterile areas. This is exactly where a stationary core's zero carryover matters.
Agriculture & Food Drying
Drying and greenhouse exhaust is moisture-heavy; plate recovery returns the sensible heat only, keeping odour and moisture out of the supply — the correct rule for agricultural drying duty.
Light Industrial Process
For moderately fouling process exhaust, a wash-in-place plate recovers sensible heat without a rotating matrix to clean.
Shortlist for Plate Recovery
- Clean or sterile exhaust? Plate (sensible or membrane) is the safe default.
- Humid climate, want moisture recovery? Use an enthalpy / membrane plate, not a wheel, where carryover is banned.
- Fouling exhaust? Specify wash-in-place plate.
