The two most common air-to-air designs are the plate (fixed-plate recuperator) and the rotary (thermal wheel). Both recover energy from exhaust air, but they behave very differently in the field. This guide helps you pick the right one.
How they differ mechanically
A plate exchanger is a stack of stationary plates: supply and exhaust air run in adjacent channels and never touch. A rotary exchanger spins a porous wheel through both streams; the matrix soaks up heat (and often humidity) from exhaust, then gives it to supply as it rotates.

When plate wins
- Contamination-sensitive air: labs, pharma, hospitals—streams must stay separate.
- Mines & hazardous duties: no moving parts, no carryover.
- Data centers: 24/7 duty favours low-maintenance plate or indirect evaporative cooling.
- Drying exhaust: sensible-only plate recovers heat from dryer exhaust without moving moisture back.
When rotary wins
- Very large airflows in commercial HVAC where footprint is tight.
- Cold climates where the wheel naturally reduces frosting.
- Enthalpy recovery (both heat and humidity) is desired and slight carryover is acceptable.
Total cost of ownership
Rotary units are compact but add a motor, belt and seals that fail over time. Plate units cost a bit more in footprint at high airflow but run for years with only occasional cleaning. For most industrial and many commercial jobs, plate is the safer long-term choice unless space forces a wheel.
