Plate vs Rotary Heat Exchanger: Which to Choose

The two most common air-to-air designs are the plate (fixed-plate recuperator) and the rotary (thermal wheel). Both recover energy from exhaust air, but they behave very differently in the field. This guide helps you pick the right one.

How they differ mechanically

A plate exchanger is a stack of stationary plates: supply and exhaust air run in adjacent channels and never touch. A rotary exchanger spins a porous wheel through both streams; the matrix soaks up heat (and often humidity) from exhaust, then gives it to supply as it rotates.

Total cost of ownership

Rotary units are compact but add a motor, belt and seals that fail over time. Plate units cost a bit more in footprint at high airflow but run for years with only occasional cleaning. For most industrial and many commercial jobs, plate is the safer long-term choice unless space forces a wheel.
