Aerospace Primer Booth Exhaust Recovery with Plate Exchanger (Case Study)

An aircraft-component plant exhausts 30,000 m3/h of primer-booth air at about 27 C with primer mist. EN159 recovered sensible heat with a plate exchanger.

The Challenge

The primer booth needed conditioned make-up air. Exhaust carried primer particulates and solvent, requiring separated-stream recovery.

Why Plate Air-to-Air Recovery

Aerospace coating exhaust is solvent and particulate laden. Plate sensible recovery with separated streams avoids contaminant transfer that a rotary wheel would cause.

The EN159 Solution

EN159 BXB plate module, 30,000 m3/h, make-up air preheated from 8 C to 23 C, stainless plates with HEPA-grade prefilter on exhaust.

Measured Results

  • Recovered heat: about 0.25 MW
  • Make-up air preheated from 8 C to 23 C
  • Heating cost cut by 33 percent
  • Estimated payback: 22 months

Compliance and Selection Notes

Sensible-only plate recovery, separated streams, no rotary wheel. Primer mist not recirculated.

Frequently Asked Questions

HEPA prefilter on exhaust?

Yes, to protect the plate from primer particulate before recovery.

Why no enthalpy wheel?

It would carry primer solvent into supply air; plate sensible recovery is required.
