Where Rotary Heat Exchangers Win: Best Applications

Where Rotary Heat Exchangers Win: Best Applications

Our field guides spend a lot of words on where rotary wheels are banned — and for good reason, wheels are wrong for contaminated and sensitive exhausts. But a rotary (enthalpy) wheel is also the highest-recovery option for the right duty. This guide balances the picture: the applications where a wheel is genuinely the best choice, so you can specify with confidence either way.

What a Wheel Does Best

A wheel recovers both heat and moisture, reaching 75–85% sensible and 60–80% latent recovery — more total energy than any fixed core. Where indoor humidity must be managed and the exhaust is clean, that makes it the winner. The mechanism is in our enthalpy wheel explainer and the latent distinction in sensible vs latent recovery.

Best Applications for a Wheel

Application Why a wheel wins
Hot, humid climates (HVAC) Recovers moisture, cuts cooling + dehumidification load
Indoor pools / natatoriums High latent load, exhaust not contamination-sensitive — see pool dehumidification
Commercial buildings (humid goal) Balances indoor humidity, max total recovery
Clean, balanced ventilation No grease/contaminant concern

Where a Plate or Heat Pipe Still Beats a Wheel

Whenever the exhaust is contaminated, hazardous, or must not recirculate — pharmaceutical, paint booths, battery cabinets, kitchens — a fixed plate or heat-pipe core is safer and contamination-free. The decision rule lives in rotary vs plate and how to select.

Selection Shortcut

  1. Is humidity control a goal and is the exhaust clean? → wheel / membrane ERV.
  2. Is the duty contamination-sensitive or wheel-banned? → plate / heat pipe.
  3. Size to airflow and required effectiveness — sizing guide.
