Rotary Heat Exchangers: Where They Shine and Where They Are Banned
What a rotary wheel does
A rotary enthalpy wheel is a spinning matrix coated with a desiccant. As it turns, it stores heat and moisture from the exhaust and releases them to the supply. Total effectiveness of 70 to 85 percent is common, and it recovers both sensible and latent energy in one device.
Where wheels shine
In comfort ventilation for offices, shops, schools, and hotels, the two airstreams are both ordinary room air. A small carryover of moisture and a trace of exhaust into the supply is acceptable, and the wheel high effectiveness pays off. Where wheels are banned
The ban is about mixing, not efficiency. A wheel must not be used where the two airstreams must stay separate:
- Mines and tunnels — return air carries gas, dust, and moisture; carryover is a safety hazard. Use plate or heat pipe.
- Data centers — any exhaust or outdoor contamination reaching the cold aisle risks equipment; separation is required. Use plate (or run-around coil).
- Pharmaceutical and cleanroom exhaust — containment and GMP forbid recirculation of potentially active exhaust. Use a run-around coil or desiccant membrane.
- Laboratories and hospitals with contaminated or infectious exhaust — streams must never mix.
- Food drying — moisture and product dust must not return to product air; sensible plate only.
A purge sector reduces but does not eliminate carryover, so it does not change the ban in these duty classes.
Wheel vs plate vs run-around
When streams may mix, the wheel wins on effectiveness. When they must not mix, the wheel is off the table and you choose plate (sensible, separate) or run-around coil (separate, with a fluid loop). The full decision table is in our selection cheat-sheet.
