Sensible vs Latent Heat Recovery: Which Do You Need?
Sensible vs Latent Heat Recovery: What Is the Difference?
When you specify an air-to-air heat exchanger for energy recovery, the first question is not “plate or wheel” but “what am I actually trying to recover?” The answer splits into two physical quantities: sensible heat (temperature) and latent heat (moisture). Understanding the difference decides whether you need a plate core, a heat pipe, or an enthalpy wheel.
What Is Sensible Heat Recovery?
Sensible heat is the energy that changes air temperature. A sensible-only exchanger transfers this heat across a solid separating wall without moving any water vapor. Fixed plate exchangers and heat pipes are sensible devices: the supply air gets warmer in winter and cooler in summer, but its absolute humidity stays exactly what the outdoor air started with. Our efficiency explainer covers how to quantify sensible recovery.
What Is Latent Heat Recovery?
Latent heat is the energy bound up in water vapor. When moist exhaust air gives up its moisture to dry supply air, that energy moves too. Only devices that let water vapor cross the barrier — an enthalpy wheel or a membrane core — recover latent heat. This is what makes an ERV (energy recovery ventilator) different from a plain HRV. The direct humidity question is answered in does a heat exchanger remove humidity.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Property | Sensible (plate / heat pipe) | Latent (enthalpy wheel / membrane) |
|---|---|---|
| Transfers temperature | Yes | Yes |
| Transfers moisture | No | Yes |
| Controls indoor humidity | No (supply humidity = outdoor) | Yes (balances humidity) |
| Moving parts | None | Wheel: motor; membrane: none |
| Cross-contamination risk | None | Low (wheel) / none (membrane) |
| Best climate | Cold & dry; industrial sensible exhaust | Hot & humid; pools; commercial ERV |
When You Need Latent Recovery
Choose latent (total) recovery when indoor humidity must be managed and the outdoor climate is hot and humid — Southern China summers, indoor pools, commercial kitchens, and laundries. Recovering moisture here cuts both the cooling load and the dehumidification load on the AHU.
When Sensible-Only Is Enough (or Better)
In cold, dry climates a plain sensible HRV is simpler, cheaper, and contamination-free. Sensible-only is also the correct choice for duties where a rotating wheel is banned: pharmaceutical exhaust (no recirculation), and many industrial duties our field guide lists. For mine and hazardous exhausts, heat pipes or plates are preferred over wheels.
Plate vs Wheel: The Practical Choice
The deeper comparison lives in rotary vs plate heat exchanger. In short: pick a plate or heat pipe when you want silent, maintenance-light, contamination-free sensible recovery; pick an enthalpy wheel when humidity balance and maximum total-energy recovery outweigh the motor and seal maintenance.
Selection Shortcut
- Is humidity control a goal? If yes → enthalpy wheel/membrane (ERV).
- Is the duty contamination-sensitive or wheel-banned? → plate or heat pipe (sensible).
- Size to airflow and required effectiveness — see sizing guide.
