How to Select the Right Air-to-Air Heat Exchanger for Your Application
Choosing the wrong heat exchanger core can mean contaminated supply air, unexpected frost damage, or a payback period that never arrives. The good news is that most industrial HVAC and drying applications fit into a clear decision tree once you know the four critical questions.
1. Can the two airstreams mix?
If exhaust contains solvents, odours, bacteria, or pharmaceutical dust, the supply and exhaust airstreams must stay physically separated. In that case, use a plate heat exchanger (counter-flow or cross-flow) or a heat pipe. Rotary enthalpy wheels transfer a small fraction of exhaust air to the supply stream, so they are unsuitable for paint shops, chemical exhausts, and cleanrooms unless the application is explicitly rated for it.
2. Do you need to recover moisture?
Standard plate and heat-pipe exchangers recover sensible heat only. If the exhaust is humid and the latent load is valuable — for example in drying or humid climate ventilation — an enthalpy (rotary) wheel or a membrane enthalpy plate will recover moisture as well as heat. Typical total energy recovery for rotary wheels is 70–85%.
3. What is the operating temperature range?
For high-temperature drying exhausts above 200 °C, counter-flow plate cores with high-grade alloys are usually the best fit. For normal HVAC ranges, cross-flow plates are the simplest and lowest-cost option. In cold climates where frost is a risk, heat pipes and rotary wheels are less prone to freezing than plain counter-flow plates.
4. How much maintenance access do you have?
Rotary wheels have seals, belts and motors that need periodic inspection. Plate and heat-pipe exchangers have no moving parts and can often be washed in place. In dusty or particulate-heavy exhausts, a cleanable plate or heat-pipe core is usually the safer choice.
