Energy Recovery Ventilation for Commercial Buildings: Where the Wheel Wins

What energy recovery ventilation does

Commercial buildings bleed conditioned air out through exhaust and pull an equal amount of fresh outdoor air in. Without recovery, you pay to condition that incoming air twice: once to heat or cool it, once to humidify or dehumidify it. Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) passes the outgoing and incoming streams through a recovery core so the exhaust pre-conditions the supply.

Where the wheel wins

In comfort duty, offices, shops, schools, and hotels, both airstreams are ordinary room air. A rotary enthalpy wheel reaches 70 to 85 percent total effectiveness and recovers both sensible and latent energy in one rotating device, which is hard to beat on cost per kilowatt. When a plate is the better comfort choice

If you only need sensible recovery, or you want zero moving parts and absolute stream separation even in a comfort building, a stationary plate exchanger is the cleaner option. It trades a little effectiveness for simplicity and no carryover. Our plate overview covers it.

The hard boundary

The wheel's high effectiveness does not license its use everywhere. Any building with contaminated, infectious, or process exhaust, mines, data centers, or pharmaceutical and cleanroom air must keep streams separate. There, the wheel is excluded and you choose plate, heat pipe, or run-around coil. This boundary is non-negotiable and is detailed in our selection cheat-sheet.

Payback

For a mid-size office, an ERV can cut HVAC heating and cooling loads by 30 to 50 percent, often paying back in two to four years depending on climate and utility rates. Use our savings estimation guide to model your building.

Bottom line
