Pharmaceutical Exhaust Energy Recovery Without Air Recirculation
The containment rule
Pharmaceutical and cleanroom exhaust can carry active ingredients, solvents, or bio-material. Good Manufacturing Practice and containment design require that this air never re-enter the supply. Any device that mixes or carries a film of exhaust into intake air is disqualified, which rules out the rotary wheel and any shared-matrix exchanger.
Run-around coil
A run-around (loop) system uses two coils joined by a sealed pipe loop filled with water or glycol. The exhaust coil gives up heat to the fluid; the fluid carries it to the supply coil, which warms the incoming air. The airstreams never meet; only the fluid moves between them. Desiccant membrane option
Where humidity recovery matters, a desiccant membrane transfers water vapour through a solid polymer film while keeping the air channels separate. Like the run-around coil, there is no mixing path, so containment holds. Membranes suit make-up air units that must recover both heat and moisture without cross-contamination.
Why not a wheel here
A wheel rotating matrix physically moves a fraction of exhaust into the supply. Even a purge sector leaves carryover. For pharma that is a compliance failure, not a tuning issue. The selection boundary is explained in our rotary wheel guide: wheels are for comfort air, not containment.
Performance and pumping
Run-around coils reach about 50 to 65 percent sensible effectiveness, lower than a wheel, because the fluid loop adds resistance and the coils are indirect. That trade is accepted because safety and compliance come first. A small pump moves the fluid; size the loop for the temperature lift and the freeze point of the glycol.
