Grain and Food Drying: Sensible-Only Plate Recovery, No Recirculation

The drying exhaust problem

Grain, fruit, and many food products are dried with heated air that leaves the dryer hot and laden with moisture. That exhaust carries real energy, but it also carries dust, spores, and product odour. Recovering its heat is worthwhile; recovering it unsafely is not.

Sensible only, never total enthalpy

A total-enthalpy device (an enthalpy wheel or a membrane that passes moisture) would transfer both heat and water vapour from the dirty exhaust back into the incoming make-up air. In food production that means pushing moisture and contaminants toward the product airstream, a food-safety failure. The correct device is a sensible-only plate exchanger: it recovers heat across a solid wall while moisture stays on the exhaust side.

Why not a rotary wheel

A rotary wheel would carry a film of moist, contaminated exhaust into the supply and also suffer rapid fouling from dryer dust. It fails on both food safety and maintenance. The selection rule for drying is strict: sensible plate only, streams separate, no recirculation of exhaust into product air. See the boundary cases in Plate Heat Exchanger Applications.

How the loop is arranged

Fresh make-up air passes through the cold side of the plate exchanger, picking up sensible heat from the hot exhaust on the other side. The pre-heated make-up air then enters the burner or heater, cutting fuel use. The exhaust itself is vented. No exhaust air touches the product path. In some layouts a second heat exchanger or a heat pump upgrades the recovered sensible heat further.

A sizing example

A dryer exhausts 20,000 m3/h at 80C with make-up air at 10C. A sensible plate exchanger at 65 percent effectiveness pre-heats the intake by 0.65 times (80 minus 10) equals 45.5C, to about 55.5C. Recovered power is roughly 20,000 divided by 3600 times 1.1 times 1.005 times 45.5, or about 280 kW. Over a drying season that is a large fuel saving with zero compromise to product safety. Cleaning and hygiene

Drying air fouls plates, so the exchanger needs access for wash-down and a frame that drains. Choose a plate core that can be withdrawn and cleaned; avoid any design that traps product dust.

Bottom line
