Exhaust Air Heat Recovery Systems for Industry

Exhaust Air Heat Recovery Systems for Industry

Industrial processes — drying, curing, painting, ventilation — exhaust warm air continuously, and that exhaust carries most of the thermal energy you paid to generate. An air-to-air heat exchanger recovers that sensible heat from the exhaust stream and pre-conditions the incoming make-up air, cutting fuel and electricity cost with no combustion and no moving heat carrier. This guide covers how exhaust-air heat recovery systems are built and specified.

Why Exhaust Heat Recovery Pays

Exhaust from a process can sit at 30–120°C. Venting it outdoors throws that energy away every hour the plant runs. A fixed plate or heat-pipe core recovers 60–85% of the sensible heat back into the supply. Our waste-heat recovery methods overview and efficiency reference quantify the savings; a typical 10,000 m³/h exhaust at 60°C against 10°C outdoor returns roughly 160 kW to the make-up air at 80% effectiveness.

Core Choice: Plate or Heat Pipe (Usually Not a Wheel)

For most industrial exhaust the two streams must stay separated (no cross-contamination), and the duty is sensible-only. That points to a plate or heat-pipe core. A rotary wheel is ruled out for contaminated or banned duties — the logic is in our field guide where rotary wheels are banned and the comparison rotary vs plate. Heat pipes are especially attractive for remote or maintenance-light installs because they are passive (no fan motor on the core).

System Layout

  1. Route exhaust through one side of a counter-flow plate (or heat-pipe) core, make-up air through the other.
  2. Add an upstream filter for dust, overspray, or fines — see our paint-booth recovery and textile/laundry recovery pieces.
  3. Size fans for the core pressure drop — pressure-drop reference.
  4. Add a summer bypass for when no recovery is needed.

Material by Duty

Exhaust Recommended plate
Clean warm air Coated aluminum
Hot / acidic / flue gas Stainless — welded stainless plate
Corrosive / chemical PP polymer

The trade-offs are detailed in our material selection guide.
