Plate Heat Exchangers in Fresh-Air Handling Units: Sensible Recovery Done Right
Fresh air is expensive without recovery
A fresh-air handling unit (AHU) brings outdoor air into a building and exhausts an equal volume. In winter that means heating cold incoming air; in summer, cooling it. A recovery core between the two streams reclaims most of that energy before the air reaches the coils, shrinking the heating and cooling plant.
Plate exchangers in the AHU
A stationary plate exchanger, counter-flow or cross-flow, sits in the AHU air path with the supply and exhaust on opposite sides of thin walls. It recovers sensible heat with complete stream separation and no moving parts. That separation is why plates are the default choice for fresh-air units in most buildings. Counter-flow versus cross-flow
Counter-flow plates reach the highest sensible effectiveness, often 75 percent or more, because the two streams run opposite directions. Cross-flow is easier to package and clean, typically 60 to 70 percent. Choose on space, cleaning access, and the effectiveness your energy model needs.
Frost and bypass
In cold climates the exhaust can ice the plate. AHUs handle this with a return-air bypass or a pre-heat coil ahead of the exchanger. Because the plate has no rotating matrix, frost control is straightforward and predictable. Our frost-strategy article goes deeper.
Plate versus wheel in an AHU
If you only need sensible recovery, the plate wins on simplicity and zero carryover. A wheel adds latent recovery but introduces rotation, seals, and a small exhaust-to-supply leak, which some building owners avoid.
