Rotary Wheel Maintenance: Purge Sector, Seals, and When to Walk Away
Wheels earn their keep only with maintenance

The purge sector
The purge sector is a slice of the wheel that vents a fraction of the exhaust to outside before it rotates into the supply, reducing carryover. It must stay clean and unobstructed; a fouled purge sector lets more exhaust migrate into the supply. Inspect it quarterly and wash the wheel face when pressure drop climbs.
Seals, bearings, and belt
Edge seals wear and let airstreams bypass the matrix. Check seal contact, listen for bearing noise, and verify belt tension and alignment. A slipping belt slows the wheel and drops effectiveness. Log effectiveness annually with a temperature-rise test.
When to walk away from a wheel
Maintenance cannot fix a wheel used in the wrong duty. If the application is a mine, data center, pharmaceutical or cleanroom exhaust, laboratory, or food-drying stream, a wheel is the wrong device regardless of service. Those duty classes require separate-stream recovery (plate, heat pipe, or run-around coil) because the airstreams must never mix.
