Heat Pipe Heat Exchangers 101: Working Fluid, Tilt, and Limits

What a heat pipe is

A heat pipe is a sealed tube with a small amount of working fluid and a wick or grooved wall. Heat at the evaporator boils the fluid; the vapour travels to the condenser where it gives up heat and turns back to liquid; the wick or gravity returns the liquid. Net result: heat moves from one end to the other with almost no temperature drop and no external pump.

Gravity-assisted vs wicked

A gravity-assisted (thermosyphon) heat pipe needs the condenser above the evaporator so liquid drains back by gravity. That is why HVAC heat-pipe recovery coils are tilted a few degrees. A wicked heat pipe works in any orientation but costs more. For building and industrial recovery, the tilted gravity type is standard.

Why tilt matters

If a gravity heat pipe is installed flat or upside down, the liquid cannot return and the pipe stops working. A typical rule is a 3 to 5 degree slope with the condenser higher than the evaporator. Sensible heat only

A heat pipe transfers sensible heat through a sealed wall. It does not move moisture. That makes it naturally safe for separate-stream duty: there is no path for one airstream to reach the other. It is not a substitute for total-enthalpy recovery where you need humidity transfer.

Operating limits

Every heat pipe has bounds. The capillary limit is the maximum heat the wick can return; the sonic limit appears at very high vapour velocity; entrainment occurs when vapour drag pulls liquid back toward the evaporator; and the frozen-start problem can block a pipe in deep cold. Working-fluid choice (ammonia, water, methanol, refrigerants) sets the temperature range. Stay inside these limits and a heat pipe runs for decades with no service.

Where heat pipes fit

Use them where you want passive, separate-stream, maintenance-free recovery: telecom shelters, mine and tunnel portals, remote pump stations, and as a frost-free pre-heater ahead of a plate exchanger. They pair well with plate and run-around systems rather than competing with them.

Bottom line
