Pharmaceutical Cleanroom Exhaust Heat Recovery with Cross-Flow Exchangers

Pharmaceutical cleanrooms exhaust large volumes of conditioned, filtered air. Recovering the energy in that exhaust is attractive, but only if the supply air can never be contaminated by the extract. A cross-flow air-to-air heat exchanger is the right tool: a solid plate keeps the two airstreams apart while heat still transfers.

Why not a rotary wheel

Rotary (enthalpy) wheels pass both streams through the same matrix and rely on a purge sector to limit carryover. In a cleanroom that residual cross-contact risk is unacceptable. A fixed cross-flow plate has no shared media, so there is zero pathway for particles, microbes or chemical traces to migrate from exhaust to supply.

Where it fits

Place the cross-flow core in the AHU between the cleanroom exhaust and the outdoor air intake, recovering heat to pre-condition make-up air before the cooling coil or heater. This reduces both heating and cooling loads while protecting air quality.
