
Mine Ventilation Pre-Heating and Pre-Cooling with Cross-Flow Heat Exchangers
Underground mines move enormous airflows to control gas, dust and heat. In cold climates the intake air must be pre-heated before it reaches the workings, or it forms ice on walls, rails and cables. In hot climates it must be pre-cooled. A cross-flow air-to-air heat exchanger recovers energy from the exhaust ventilation air to condition the intake.
A plate core, not a wheel
For mine air, a fixed plate exchanger is the conservative choice: it keeps the outgoing and incoming streams fully separated, avoiding any carryover of dust, diesel fumes or moisture into the fresh intake. Cross-flow geometry gives a compact, robust core that handles high airflow with low maintenance.

- Energy saving: reclaiming heat from exhaust air sharply reduces the boiler or heater load.
- Reliability: no rotating wheel, seals or purge sector to fail in a harsh environment.
Sizing for the shaft
We size the core from the mine's design airflow, the temperature difference between intake and exhaust, and the allowable pressure drop. Where intake and exhaust ducts run close, a cross-flow recovery module is straightforward to install between them.
