When a datasheet claims “80% effectiveness”, certification is what tells you that number came from a repeatable test, not a marketing slide. For air-to-air exchangers the three marks buyers meet are AHRI, Eurovent and CE — and they are not the same thing.
AHRI (North America)
AHRI 400 covers air-to-air heat recovery equipment and defines how sensible and enthalpy effectiveness are tested and reported at rated conditions. A unit listed in the AHRI Directory of Certified Product has had its ratings verified by an independent lab. For U.S./Canadian specifiers this is the default proof of performance — and many green-building and utility-incentive programmes require it.
Eurovent (Europe)
Eurovent certification follows EN 308 (test method) and EN 13053 (rating) and applies the same logic: a third party checks that the published effectiveness and pressure-drop figures match measured performance. European tenders and OEM supply chains routinely ask for the Eurovent label.
CE (Europe, legal marking)
CE is a declaration of conformity with EU health, safety and environmental directives (e.g. machinery, pressure equipment, RoHS). It says the product is legal to place on the EU market; it is not a performance rating. A CE mark tells you nothing about whether the core actually recovers 80% — that is what AHRI/Eurovent verify.
What certification actually buys you
- Comparable numbers: everyone is tested the same way, so you can compare cores fairly.
- Auditability: certified ratings can be checked against the public directory.
- Lower risk: a certified unit is far less likely to under-perform and trigger a retrofit.
- Tender compliance: many public and commercial bids list a certification as a pass/fail gate.
How to read a certified rating
Check the test conditions, not just the headline percentage: airflow, face velocity, temperature and humidity at which effectiveness was measured. A core rated 85% at low face velocity may drop to 75% at your duty. Our datasheet guide walks through the rest. Also confirm the rating covers your fluid (e.g. greasy kitchen exhaust needs a coated or cleanable core — see materials).
Certification vs reality
Certification proves the clean, new unit at rated conditions. Real life adds fouling, imbalance and off-design temperature. That is why we recommend sizing with margin and a maintenance plan (see cleaning & maintenance).
