When two manufacturers quote "80% effective" cores, the only way to compare them fairly is a common test method. That is what AHRI and Eurovent certification provide: independent, repeatable rating of energy recovery equipment so a published number means the same thing across brands, labs and model years. Without it, "80%" can mean anything the marketing team wants, and the buyer has no defence.
What the programs cover
AHRI 1060 (Certification of Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Equipment) rates sensible and total effectiveness, pressure drop, and for rotary devices the outdoor-air contamination (carryover) and bypass factors. Eurovent certification uses the EN 308 test procedure and the EUROVENT 6/14 guideline for air-to-air units. Both publish the results in a searchable public directory so a specifier can verify a model before purchase rather than trusting a PDF. The testing is performed by accredited laboratories, and participating manufacturers submit cores for periodic re-testing, so the listing stays honest even as product lines change.

Why certification changes selection
A certified core carries a rated effectiveness and pressure drop measured to a standard, not a marketing figure. That matters for code compliance: ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC energy-recovery requirements are met using certified performance, and plan reviewers will ask for the directory listing to close out the permit. It also protects you when the installed unit is commissioned against the rated curve, because both sides of the comparison use the same definition of effectiveness. Reading the listing and what it does not cover
A directory entry shows the model, tested airflow, face velocity, reported sensible and total effectiveness, pressure drop on each side, and for wheels the carryover and bypass factors. Read it at your operating airflow, not the headline, because effectiveness falls as face velocity rises. If a vendor cannot show a current listing, treat the claim as unverified and move on; the whole value of AHRI and Eurovent is that the number is checked by someone who does not work for the manufacturer. Note that certification covers the core only, not the installation, the controls or the duct connections, so a certified core can still underperform if the bypass damper leaks or the sensors are misplaced. Match the certification type to the duty: a certified plate core with essentially zero leakage for separation duties, or a certified enthalpy wheel with documented carryover below the limit for latent-heavy commercial loads.
