Why this matters for tenders
Recovered heat displaces boiler or electric heating that would have burned fuel. At a typical 0.55 kgCO2/kWh grid factor, every 1 MWh/yr avoided is about 0.55 tCO2e. ESG reports, LEED/carbon credits and green-building tenders all count this — pair the number with our payback tool to show both the carbon and the cash case.
Frequently asked questions
Which emission factor should I use?
Use your local grid average. China coal-heavy grids run ~0.8–0.9; the EU average is ~0.25; a renewable-powered site approaches 0. Check your utility's published figure.
Are the tree/car equivalences accurate?
They are rules of thumb: 1 tree absorbs ~21 kg CO2/yr; an average car emits ~4.6 tCO2/yr. They communicate scale, not a certified offset.
Does recovery also cut cooling CO2?
Yes — in summer an ERV pre-cools incoming air, cutting compressor work and its emissions by the same energy maths. The calculator assumes one duty per year; sum heating and cooling savings for a full year.
